Migration is an integral part of the human experience. Somos Migrantes is a film festival by, for and about immigrants. We seek to amplify the voices of those recording and exploring the immigrant experience.
What does it mean to be labeled an immigrant by a country “founded” on indigenous land? Who is considered an immigrant? Who isn’t? What does it mean to be seen as a foreigner in a country that you thought was your own? Somos Migrantes is festival that aims to celebrate, highlight and create space for conversations around the immigrant experience in the U.S and beyond.
Films must explore the topic of migration, legal status, borders, or living/studying/working in new country. We encourage film makers to be as inter-sectional and creative as possible. Themes such as environment, family, political, economic and personal identity are just a few frames to consider. Film makers must have a direct connection to the immigrant experience and exhibit respect, sensitivity and responsibility in regards to telling the immigrant story.
The films that are accepted will be screened in Baltimore during the Roots & Raices Festival of Summer 2019. Films created chiefly for this festival are prioritized, but we encourage submission of any work surrounding the theme of migration. Up to 3 submissions per artist.
Women and members of the LGBT+ community are encouraged to submit, and immigrants are prioritized.
Submissions is: July 8, 2019.
